When you need emergency care, Providence Queen of the Valley’s Gasser Emergency Center is ready. As a Level III trauma center, we treat everything from cuts and bruises to strokes, heart attacks and most traumas.

Board-certified emergency care physicians staff our department 24 hours a day and see more than 30,000 patients each year. Together with the rest of our emergency team, they provide life-saving care using the most advanced diagnostic tests and resuscitation equipment in the region.

The Emergency Center also serves as the paramedic base station hospital for Napa County emergency services, communicating with emergency ground vehicles, air ambulances and California Highway Patrol air operations.

No one expects to face an emergency. But you can expect us to be there for you if you do. We provide the care you need with compassion and understanding.

In our Emergency Center, we treat all types of serious injuries and illnesses. Symptoms that require emergency care include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Bleeding that doesn’t stop after 10 minutes
  • Broken bones
  • Chest pain
  • Coughing or vomiting blood
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Facial drooping or weakness of an arm or leg
  • Head trauma
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Poisoning
  • Seizures
  • Severe shortness of breath
  • Suicidal feelings
Chest Pain Center

If you’re having a heart attack, every second matters. We offer advanced heart attack treatments through our cardiac catheterization lab. Our team of heart specialists is ready at a moment’s notice. They quickly open clogged arteries to restore blood flow, with a goal of preventing heart damage.

Triage

Our goal is to see everyone as quickly as possible. If you arrive with a life-threatening condition, we begin treating you right away. We prioritize those with non-urgent conditions through a process known as triage. This involves an evaluation with an emergency nurse as you register. Because we help those with the most serious conditions first, you may not receive treatment in the order in which you arrive.

Evaluation

Whenever possible, we obtain consent to treat you when you register. A doctor will then conduct an exam and order any tests needed to make a diagnosis and develop your treatment plan.

Visitors in the emergency department

It's often helpful and reassuring to have family or friends accompany you to the emergency department. In some cases, we may limit the number of visitors. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Treatment

Depending on your diagnosis, your doctor will admit you to the hospital or allow you to return home after providing treatment. We may recommend a follow-up appointment with your primary care doctor.

Medical bills

The cost of your care may include medications, supplies, lab work and X-rays. You’ll receive a separate bill from physicians who provide your emergency care. They aren’t employed by the hospital and bill their services separately.
