Inpatient Rehabilitation
Whether it’s relearning skills after stroke or recovering from a severe injury, the rehabilitation team at Providence St. Mary Medical Center can help you recover through intensive therapy while you’re in the hospital.
Inpatient rehabilitation at Providence offers more frequent and intense therapy — including physical, occupational and speech therapies — than the care typically offered at a skilled nursing facility. You’ll also receive round-the-clock care from registered nurses as well as certified registered rehabilitation nurses. Our Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility has been accredited by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) since 1983. CARF is the gold standard for Rehab Facilities.
Your doctor will discuss whether inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation is best for you. Inpatient rehabilitation might be necessary if you:
- Have a severe disability leaving you unable to care for yourself with your available resources or assistance.
- Need close medical supervision by a doctor, 24-hour-a-day rehabilitative nursing care and more than one of the following therapies: physical, occupational or speech therapy.
Our highly skilled doctors work with your primary care doctor and you to develop a personalized plan tailored to your recovery needs. Our goal is to help you heal and get stronger so you can function independently and perform daily activities with ease.
The typical stay in inpatient rehabilitation is a week to 10 days but it varies widely depending on your condition and goals. We assist with rehabilitative recovery related to these and other conditions:
- Accidental trauma or injury
- Brain injury or nervous system impairment
- Chronic wounds
- Diabetes
- Neuromuscular diseases such Myasthenia Gravis
- Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders
- Multiple sclerosis
- Neck, back and spinal cord injuries
- Neuro-immune conditions such as Guillain-Barré
- Sports and exercise-related injuries
- Stroke
- Swallowing disorders
As you improve, your doctor may recommend continued therapy through home care or outpatient services. Providence St. Mary Outpatient Rehabilitation provides full-service therapies and support as you recover. Our goal is to help you reach the highest-possible level of functioning.

If a therapist and/or nursing feel you may be a fit for inpatient rehabilitation, a consult is placed. A physiatrist will review the chart, meet with you and will decide whether or not inpatient rehabilitation treatment is right for you.
A coordinator will share the physiatrist’s findings and make admission arrangements if appropriate. Your doctor and other providers may decide you need additional recovery time first. It’s possible you’ll be admitted to rehabilitation later. It’s important to keep discussing rehabilitation with your doctor and caregivers.
If you have questions about whether or not you’re ready for rehabilitation, we’re happy to discuss them with you. For more information on inpatient rehabilitation, call 509-897-5022.
Insurance coverage varies by individual policy, but most insurance companies and Medicare cover rehabilitation services. We work with families and third-party payers to coordinate payment. We’ll bill your insurance company directly for your care at Providence St. Mary Medical Center. You’ll likely receive separate bills for professional services provided by other doctors involved in your care.
Your needs will vary on your journey toward recovery. Providence offers many resources to assist you. Ask anyone on your team and we’ll be happy to connect you to whatever type of support you need. Your medical care manager will assist with finding help such as financial assistance or navigating insurance or other procedures. Providence offers a variety of assistance programs to help those who need it, and there are community resources available, too.
We have chaplains who are always here to offer personal, spiritual and emotional support during difficult times.
