Commonly Used Testing and Diagnostics

Your doctors use many diagnostic and prognostic tools to determine which therapies work best to treat your cancer. Taking into account factors specific to your case, like cancer type and the genetic or molecular profile of the tumor, these may include one or more of the following:

  • Biopsy
  • Fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy
  • Genetics and genomics
  • MRI
  • PET/CT scan
  • Ultrasound

Why Choose Us for Your Gynecologic Cancer Care?

As our patient, you have access to the best specialists and a full range of support services for you and your loved ones – all conveniently located. We’re also able to minimize the time between your diagnosis and treatment with coordinated, whole-person care that always puts you first.

The earlier your cancer is diagnosed, the sooner you can begin treatment and the better your outcomes will be. With our region-wide coordinated care, you are diagnosed, and your treatment can begin more quickly. We coordinate care between your cancer specialists and your primary care provider – all within Spokane – so you won’t wait long to see your doctor.

Your care team works with you to design a treatment plan that fits your needs. Our spectrum of care includes support services – such as registered dietitians, counselors and chaplains – to care for every aspect of your health. If you have a cancer diagnosis, your care team receives input from our multidisciplinary tumor boards, where your local oncology team meets with other regional experts to discuss patient cases and make sure you’re getting the very best, timely treatment.

Our dedicated clinicians also offer a telehealth program in partnership with Providence St. Joseph’s in Montana, so surgery and specialty care patients can get the expert follow-up care they need, closer to home.

One thing we know about cancer care is that it takes a team! You may be treated by gynecologic oncologists, who are fellowship-trained to treat cancers of the reproductive organs and have a scientist’s understanding of specific female cancers. Our patient  was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after having flu-like symptoms. Thanks to her oncologist, she was in surgery within a week and has now been cancer-free for more than nine years. Amy credits her doctor with her recovery, saying, “The only reason I’m here is because I had a very awesome oncologist.”

Your multidisciplinary team may also include board-certified medical oncologists, gynecologic specialists, radiation oncologists and gynecologic surgeons. You and your family also receive a full range of support services well beyond conventional treatment, from genetic counseling and education to nutrition and pain management.

Cancer doesn’t discriminate, and access to great care should be the same for everyone. At Providence Gynecologic Oncology Center, we are deeply committed to making sure every patient we treat has access to the best care.

We value, respect and support the racial, ethnic, religious, spiritual, gender and sexual identities of each member of our diverse communities. In keeping with our Mission, Providence offers financial assistance programs that provide free and low-cost care to those who are eligible.

We are part of the Providence Regional Cancer Center, which features world-class cancer specialists in six hospitals and medical centers, as well as nearly 20 specialty clinics throughout the region. As our patient, you have access to the largest community-based cancer network in the United States. This means your local cancer care team shares knowledge and experience with other world-class clinicians across Providence’s 51 hospitals in seven states. The power of our network is one of the reasons thousands of newly diagnosed cancer patients choose us for their cancer care each year.

In Her Own Words

“The only reason I’m here is because I had a very awesome oncologist. Dr. Bergman has a genuine care for keeping people free of this disease. If you can get to a good gynecologic oncologist early your survival rate goes up considerably.

Because you’re in the fight of your life, you form a different bond with your oncologist than you may with your general doctor. They encourage you to live a fuller life... they look at you as more than a patient.”
