Often the earlier you find cancer, the easier it is to treat. Screening recommendations vary according to your age, family health history, personal history and risk factors. Talking with your doctor is the best way to determine the screening tests and schedule that are right for you.
Common screening tests include those for cancers of the breast, cervix, colon and rectum, lung and prostate. Based on your needs, your doctor may recommend other screening tests as well.
Diagnostic imaging tools allow us to detect many types of cancer. Imaging technology can also help us monitor your response to treatment.
Imaging tests we use include:
- CT
- Mammography
- MRI
- PET
- Ultrasound
- X-ray
If we identify a tumor, a surgeon or other provider will biopsy it and send it to a pathologist who will determine if it’s cancer. If it is, the pathologist’s report will tell us the type and provide other useful information. Your doctors will use this information to guide your treatment.
An important part of your care at Providence is our tumor review board. It brings together providers from many different specialties to discuss your case and make treatment recommendations. Members of the team may include surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists and others.
Our genetic counseling program can help you determine if you or your family members are at risk for hereditary cancers. Knowledge of your risk can help you make informed decisions about treatment, screening and prevention strategies.
Our genetic services include:
- Assessment of hereditary risk
- Counseling regarding medical and family history
- Evaluation of medical and family history information to determine the likelihood that a condition may be hereditary
- Genetic testing when a genetic cause is suspected and testing is desired
- Interpretation of test results
- Risk reduction strategies
- Screening recommendations
Treatment is based on the type of cancer you have as well as factors such as its characteristics, whether it has spread, your personal preferences and more. In many cases, more than one treatment is part of your care.
Treatments we offer include:
- Biological therapy
- Chemotherapy
- High-dose brachytherapy
- Hormone therapy
- Immunotherapy
- Radiation therapy
- Radiosurgery
- Surgery
