Celebrating National Women Physicians Day

As we celebrate National Women Physicians Day on Feb. 3, we recognize the remarkable contributions of our women physicians and honor the courage of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States in 1849.

This day is a reminder of the pioneering spirit and resilience of the women in medicine throughout history who’ve laid the foundation for future generations of female physicians. This observance also highlights efforts to support gender equality and diversity in the medical field.

Women physicians often balance their clinical responsibilities with familial roles such as being a spouse, parent, or caregiver. These experiences enrich their empathy and understanding, enabling them to provide more compassionate and comprehensive care to their patients. Often during medical school and residency, they may pause their careers for family care, pregnancy, or post-partum care. These lived experiences are not setbacks in their professional journeys but make them stronger and more compassionate physicians.

Providence was founded nearly 170 years ago by women who used their faith, compassion, conviction and good old-fashioned grit to serve the needs of their community. Today, our women physicians stand on the backs of our foundresses, serving in pivotal leadership, patient care, medical research, and innovation roles, while also engaging in their local communities. Their commitment continues the Providence Mission and embodies our values ensuring all who enter our doors receive the care they need and while feeling valued, supported, and empowered.

Thank you to our women physicians for their dedication to compassionate care and their remarkable contributions to medicine. You’re helping make our vision of health for a better world a reality.
