Maternity
When you are expecting a baby, you feel so many emotions – from overwhelming love to nervous anticipation.
At Providence, we know what a fulfilling and sometimes unsettling time this can be. You and your family may have lots of questions as you prepare to welcome a new member of your family. We surround you with care and support to ensure that you and your baby are healthy and happy.
Our maternity care team stays by your side throughout your pregnancy, during childbirth and after your baby is born.
The maternity nurses and family practice physicians at Providence Mount Carmel Hospital provide a full range of pregnancy and birthing care. Our maternity services include:
- Child Birth Classes
- Dietary education
- Fetal Non Stress Testing
- First through third trimester ultrasound
- Maternal labor evaluation
When it’s time for baby to arrive, you and your family can welcome your child in one of our comfortable and well-appointed maternity suites, which rival those found in larger urban hospitals.
Our childbirth services include:
- Cesarean deliveries
- Twin deliveries
- Uncomplicated deliveries
- Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC)
When you breastfeed your baby, you are bonding with your child and providing essential nutrition – as well as physical and mental benefits for you and your newborn. Learning how to breastfeed can be stressful at times. Our experienced, board-certified lactation nurses work with you before you leave the hospital and after you go home. We can help with nursing a premature infant to tips on involving other family members.
After your baby is born, we make sure that you are connected with one of our caring family medical practitioners. These doctors provide ongoing care and immunizations for your child until adulthood.
You can download our free pregnancy and parenting app to get access to checklists, articles and class schedules about pregnancy as well as breastfeeding support videos. Learn more about the app.
If you have a complex or high-risk pregnancy, your doctor will connect you with specialized care at a Providence Maternal-Fetal Medicine Clinic.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine Clinic provides additional testing and a higher level of care for you and your baby. Services include:
- Amniocentesis
- Genetic counseling
- Ultrasound interpretation
Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists work with your doctor to closely monitor the health of you and your baby throughout your pregnancy and delivery.
If your Maternal-Fetal Medicine team knows your baby will need extra care at birth, your delivery may take place at a nearby Providence hospital with a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Our NICUs provide the highest level of specialized care for babies born premature or with a serious medical issue.
Within 30 days after your baby’s birth, you will be required to separately enroll your baby in an insurance plan.
Most insurance plans that offer maternity benefits will include well-baby care under the mother’s plan for the first 30 days following birth. We recommend you contact your insurance provider directly to find out what the regulations are on health insurance coverage for your baby. The Human Resources Benefits department at your workplace may also be able to assist you with this information.
It is your responsibility to notify the Admitting staff at Providence of any and all insurance plans you may have for yourself and your baby.
It is also very important to notify Admitting of any changes in your insurance plans. The hospital has specific deadlines for notifying insurance providers about your admission as well as notifying them on the birth of your baby. If we do not have correct and complete information, your insurance may not cover the services provided and you may be responsible for any incurred charges.
Enrollment for health insurance through the new exchanges is now open.
