Each year, U.S. News & World Report ranks hospitals in 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions as well as high quality across all areas of care. An overall rating of "high performing" indicates a hospital was significantly better than the national average in a given procedure or condition. The "best regional" rank is determined by a hospital’s performance in the adult specialty rankings analysis and by its scores across each of the 20 procedure and condition areas U.S. News & World Report evaluates.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating (Overall Star Rating) summarizes a variety of measures across 5 areas of quality into a single star rating (between 1 and 5 stars) for each hospital. The 5 measure groups include mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care.
