Our Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program (BMSP) provides a special service for people who do not wish to receive blood transfusions under any circumstances. It gives patients the option to receive medical treatment without using blood or blood products.
Common reasons for not wanting blood transfusions include:
- Conscientious objection
- Religious conviction
- Fear of potential risks

Our state-of-the-art technology and procedures include:
- Cell Saver (a device that collects blood lost during surgery, cleans it and returns it to the patient’s body)
- Harmonic scalpel (a surgical instrument that cuts and cauterizes tissue at the same time)
- Volume expanders (fluid that is put in a patient’s veins to expand the volume of blood and improve circulation)
- Synthetic erythropoietin (a drug given to increase red blood cell count)
These techniques and technology are used to expand or conserve a person’s own blood, reducing the need for a transfusion.
The program coordinator is available to answer your questions about the care that is right for you. The coordinator can help you find a physician who meets your personal needs. They are also available to help arrange the hospital stay for both you and your family.
