Magnet Recognition is a prestigious award that recognizes organizations all over the world whose nurses exemplify a commitment to excellence in patient care that meets rigorous standards. These exemplary nurses align their strategic goals to improve patient care at their respective organizations and ultimately benefit the organization as a whole.
The American Academy of Nursing first commissioned a study in 1981 seeking to identify hospitals with the best nursing practices in the nation. These select hospitals were dubbed “Magnets” to signify their ability to attract and retain outstanding nurses. Today the Magnet Recognition Program is run by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, which "recognizes health care organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice."
Hospitals wishing to receive Magnet recognition must showcase superior nursing practice, processes for measuring and improving the quality of care, and collaboration across different specialties. They must also pass a length and rigorous evaluation involving participation from leadership and staff that reviews evidence of excellent patient care and a healthy work environment during an on-site visit and a formal review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.
Nurses who participate in the Magnet Recognition Program gain the opportunity to further their education and career development while being supported in their journey, while patients enjoy an increased excellence of care. Both nurses and their patients experience higher satisfaction rates, benefiting the entire organization.

Providence Alaska Medical Center is honored to have Magnet-recognized nurses as part of their caregiver team, but they don’t stop there. PAMC is committed to continued excellence and re-applies every four years to maintain Magnet status and demonstrate our ongoing efforts in the continuous pursuit of excellence in patient care.
Throughout our continued journey, our nurses remain positive and focused on providing the very best care they can – improving their patients’ experiences, developing our caregivers and raising the quality of the nursing profession.
