Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance's Transitional Care Center recognized by U.S. News & World Report
Eleventh Consecutive Year for Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance’s Transitional Care Center
For the 11th straight year, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance’s Transitional Care Center (TCC) has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s Best Nursing Homes.
The 78-bed unit provides care for patients who no longer need hospital care but are still recovering from illnesses or injuries that limit their abilities to be cared for at home.
Glenn Van Houten, Providence Los Angeles-Coastal Service Area senior director of respiratory care for Providence and administrator, ST Rehabilitation, has been there.
Thirty years ago, Van Houten suffered third-degree burns over 40 percent of his body and was hospitalized for two months, then underwent two years of rehabilitation and reconstruction. It was this experience that taught him the importance of compassionate and emotional support for patients coping with the ups and downs of healing.
“Our success is because of the compassion of our caregivers and how they embrace our values and the Providence Promise, know me, care for me, ease my way,” he said. “They are a team, the physical therapists, occupational therapists and nurses have built exceptional camaraderie where we celebrate our wins together.”
It was one of his doctors all those years ago who convinced him to seek a health care career as a respiratory therapist.
Van Houten was tapped in 2022 to lead Little Company of Mary’s TCC. The pandemic had resulted in a significant decline in patients – and consequently staffing – because of the quick spread of the COVID virus in nursing homes.
In rebuilding the staff and looking to his own experience, he sought not only skill but deep compassion for not only patients, but co-workers. And despite the challenges of rebuilding, the TCC continued its record of excellence and No. 11 on the Best Nursing Homes list.
“You have to invest in the caregiver and then the patients will be taken care of,” he said.
Since 2009, U.S. News’ annual Best Nursing Homes ratings have assisted American families in need of either short-term rehabilitation or long-term care for themselves or a loved one.
Providence Little Company of Mary’s Torrance TCU earned this recognition by achieving a rating of “High Performing,” the highest possible rating, for transitional care. U.S. News gives the designation of Best Nursing Home only to those that satisfy its proprietary assessment of consistent performance in quality measures.
For the 2025 edition, U.S. News evaluated nearly 15,000 nursing homes on patient and resident outcomes, such as infection rates; staffing levels; potentially inappropriate reliance on antipsychotic drugs; health inspection results and other indicators of quality.
“U.S. News' Best Nursing Homes ratings put patient well-being at the forefront and provide families with the objective information they need to make confident decisions about their loved ones' care,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “These annual ratings recognize U.S. nursing homes that deliver high-quality care, earning consistent positive outcomes and support American families in finding local nursing homes that prioritize safety and well-being.”
U.S. News & World Report bases its ratings on various measures, including health inspections, nurse staffing levels, patient outcomes and managing issues like falls and infections, along with other factors. These measures ensure we are providing the best care possible to those we serve.
“This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our caregivers and physicians,” said Michael Ricks, chief executive of the service area. “This team’s tireless efforts and compassionate care have made a significant impact on the lives of our patients and their families.”
