Recognized as an integral part of Providence, our volunteers provide encouragement, comfort and strength to our patients and visitors. Whether working in the gift shop, delivering food to our patients, or lending a hand in one of our community outreach programs, helping others in their healing process can be a very satisfying and inspiring experience. Our Providence volunteers often make new friends and learn new skills along the way. Offer your time and talents and reap the rewards of being needed and appreciated.
It is recommended that Volunteers be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 with latest booster when working at the hospital.
Volunteer requirements for Providence Medical Centers are easily met. People of all ages, backgrounds and abilities who want to help others can become volunteers. An initial interview matches each volunteer's interest, talent and schedule to the Medical Centers' needs. All volunteers attend an orientation to introduce them to the Providence Mission and Core Values, as well as become familiar with various departmental functions before beginning assignments.

Most areas of the hospital, including the Disney Family Cancer Center, have openings for volunteer assistance. Some areas will require more mobility than others, some require ability to lift more than 10 pounds without difficulty, and some may require special training. We believe there is a perfect placement for all who wish to volunteer. Below are some of the areas of opportunity.
- Customer Service
- Gift Shop
- Information Desk
- Admitting Ambassador
- Disney Family Cancer Center
- Emergency Department
- Nursing Units
- Critical Care – ICU
- Telemetry – Cardiology, Neurology
- Med-Surg – Orthopedics, Oncology, Bariatric
- Physical Therapy and Acute Rehab
- Radiology
- Retail Pharmacy
- We do not have a “Shadowing” program. Any clinical rounding/education is done through our clinical education department
- There is a wait list for all Mother/Child areas, we do not have positions in the NICU
- Unfortunately, we do not have a “cuddle” program at PSJ at this time
Whether 16 or 96 – we have a perfect placement for those with a volunteer’s heart for helping serve the medical community.
- Volunteering is an experience than can be a meaningful and awesome adventure! You will get out of it, what you put into it, and rarely are two days here the same. Whether it is in a customer service capacity, or helping on one of our nursing or specialty areas, donating your time helps out the hospital in so many ways.
- For those who want to be of service for the hospital without clinical experience, we have several customer service areas that could use assistance greeting and assisting patients and their families in finding where they’re going, escorting to testing areas, or helping departments with discharging patients when they’re ready to go home. We also have shifts available in our Gift Shop for those who would like to help folks find a perfect gift for a patient or themselves!
- For those with interest in the medical field, volunteering is NOT a clinical rotation with hands on experience – but - you will be on the nursing floors, specialty areas, or Emergency Department, assisting the staff with small tasks they often don’t have time to perform. You will be able to observe how a staff operates, how they respond to different kinds of codes, and the daily care of parents from an actual nursing environment. Building relationships with the staff and other volunteers, you’ll also have access to talk about those things with the folks in the department, in the profession you’d like to know more about. Hopefully it can help you find some clarity in how to map your future.
- Volunteering can be used for high schools, applications for colleges, and general community service as hours to meet specific needs for the volunteer.
- Volunteers will have free parking on the days they volunteer and can enjoy a 20% discount on prepared food in our cafeteria with their id badge!
- Volunteers are invited to participate in appropriate Staff/Caregiver events and activities.
Thank you for your interest in applying to our Volunteer Program.
We have been overwhelmed at the response to our program, and apologize that we cannot take more applications at this time. .
We do have limited space during the week to volunteer at the Disney Family Cancer Center and our Gift Shop, as well as spots at our Information Desk late afternoon and on weekends. If you are interested in any of these areas, please email our Volunteer Coordinator, Tina Boucher, at [email protected].
We will reopen for applications as soon as we have availability in other areas of the hospital. That date is currently unknown, but we anticipate in early 2025. Please check back for updates or possible opportunities.
