Genomic Prevention and Wellness
If you are healthy but want to know your predisposition to disease, we offer in-depth counseling and innovative genetic testing, including polygenic risk score (PRS), pharmacogenomic testing and whole genome testing. If you are adopted or otherwise have an unknown family history, you also can take advantage of this service.
These tests can detect diseases early or even prevent them. We collaborate with other specialists in the field and offer nutrition and mind-body therapies through our integrative medicine department.
How Our Doctors are Making a Difference
Medical geneticist Ora Gordon, MD, focuses on prevention and wellness screenings for genetic diseases. She explains how she helps patients take control of their health and understand their risk for disease.
Genetic Tests
In addition to targeted cancer, cardiac or whole genome screening (WGS), we offer the following preventive genetic and genomic tests:
- Calculation of polygenic risk (PRS). PRS looks for many lower-impact genetic changes, or mutations. A single mutation may not significantly add to disease risk, but when mathematically combined into a PRS, these variants can have a meaningful impact on risk for a given condition. These conditions include breast, prostate, pancreatic, ovarian and colon cancers, coronary artery disease, diabetes and heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat).
- Pharmacogenomics (PGX). This testing analyzes genomic mutations that influence the way your body metabolizes and is affected by medications. We collaborate with pharmacists to guide you and your primary provider on decisions about medication therapies.
- Interpretation of direct-to-consumer (DTC) genomic tests. The market for these tests is rapidly expanding. We can help interpret the results of direct-to-consumer tests and explain what they may mean for you and your family.
- Multi cancer early detection (MCED) tests. This is a new and exciting technology that uses a blood sample to detect the presence and location of cancer in the body. This test is available through both research studies and clinical care at Providence.
