Providence Psychiatric Outpatient Program
Providence Psychiatric Outpatient Program
Our Programs
The Adult Behavioral Health Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center provide intensive mental health treatment to people in crisis due to severe psychiatric symptoms. Our highly skilled staff offers effective individualized treatment for a wide range of mental health concerns.
PHP and IOP behavioral health programs are types of structured mental health treatment that provide more intensive support than traditional outpatient therapy, but less intensive than full-time inpatient hospitalization. These programs can be effective in preventing hospitalization or easing the transition from inpatient hospitalization back to home life.
Patients participate in group therapy sessions, individual counseling, medication management, and other evidence-based therapies during the day and return home in the evenings. Patients in these programs can connect with others who are also in recovery, providing a sense of community and support. This can be helpful in reducing feelings of isolation and promoting long-term recovery.
PHP is the highest level of care and is “full-time” (4 - 5 hours per day; 5 days per week) for 1 - 2 weeks. The primary goals of PHP are stabilization of symptoms and providing daily structure and support. This environment is designed for patients to focus on their recovery and help them develop healthy habits and coping skills. This can be especially beneficial for those struggling with mental health symptoms that have impacted their ability to function at work, school, or other social obligations.
The IOP at Providence is a “step-down” and is similar to PHP, but it offers a more flexible schedule with patients participating in care 2 - 3 days per week for 3 - 6 weeks. This is designed to help them continue to manage their mental health concerns while taking on and maintaining increased responsibilities. On the days that patients are not participating in IOP, they are encouraged to develop outpatient resources and support to prepare them to transition back to community care.
