Providence Children's Development Institute - Newberg
Our Approach
At the Providence Children’s Development Institute – Newberg, we focus on helping families and children with developmental needs, including autism, from infancy through the teenage years.
Our program helps identify and treat developmental concerns, like challenges with daily activities, social skills, communication, movement or learning.
Children are referred to our program to help identify and treat developmental concerns. These concerns may begin anytime during a child’s development and include difficulties with activity, such as daily activities, social skills, communication, mobility and learning. Our multidisciplinary teams collaborate to create personalized treatment programs designed to help each family reach their goals.
We provide a comprehensive, family-centered approach to helping children with developmental needs, from infancy through adolescence.
Developmental pediatricians evaluate and treat children who have a wide range of developmental conditions. We offer neurodevelopmental evaluations and treatment for pediatric patients who may have specific areas of concern or more complex diagnostic and treatment needs. Working with your child’s primary care physician, our developmental pediatricians perform comprehensive consultations and coordinate services for developmental concerns, including those faced by children with complex medical needs.
We use a variety of approaches to address challenges in movement and accessing home and community. We apply our specialized clinical skills to:
- Help babies/children with movement (e.g., sitting, walking, jumping, increasing strength)
- Treat issues with muscles and bones (e.g., torticollis)
- Evaluate for special equipment if needed
- Help children become as independent as possible
Through occupational therapy, we help children gain independence in the activities of daily life with direct therapy or in small groups. Our highly trained therapists help with:
- Fine-motor skills (e.g., picking things up, gripping pencils)
- Daily living skills (e.g., dressing, hygiene, school skills, home skills)
- Feeding or eating different textures of food
- Visual motor integration/handwriting
- Sensory integration and regulation concerns (i.e., helping children control emotions in a positive way)
- Interacting with others/taking turns
We offer specialized services for children with communication and/or feeding and swallowing needs. We offer direct 1:1 therapy and group therapy for:
- Language and speech development
- Feeding/swallowing
- Organizing and processing information
- Augmentative communication (i.e., speech generating devices or low-tech communication tools)
- Social communication/engagement

For referring physicians
We value our network of referring physicians and make every effort to partner with providers and tailor treatment to each patient.
First and foremost, we’re here to help. We routinely see children who might have autism spectrum disorder.
The first step is to reach out to your child’s primary care doctor if you haven’t done so already. They can provide you with a referral to our program, and then we can get your intake visit scheduled.
Our providers see children from birth up to age 14 for developmental assessments and treatment, but we provide therapies until age 18.
Developmental pediatrics is a specialty field that focuses on helping children who have or are at risk for developmental delays, including autism.
We work with your child’s primary care doctor to coordinate services for any developmental concerns – cognitive, language, motor or social – or complex medical needs.
A developmental assessment is a review of your child’s skills, including how they complete daily activities, socialize, communicate, move and learn.
During the assessment, a developmental pediatrician collects and reviews information from your child’s school, therapists and medical providers. You can expect to answer a lot of questions about your child. Overall, the assessment takes one to two hours.
The assessment results help us identify any developmental conditions and create a treatment plan.
Yes, a developmental assessment can potentially include an autism evaluation.
During the development assessment, our specialists will specifically evaluate your child for autism spectrum disorder if needed.
No. Your first visit is just an intake visit, lasting between one to two hours.
During that visit, we’ll have a discussion to better understand your concerns and plan a developmental assessment that fits your child’s needs. For example, if there are concerns that your child has autism, we’ll note that and be sure to include an autism evaluation in their assessment.
After the developmental assessment, you can view all the results in MyChart. Your child’s team will make treatment recommendations based on their unique needs. These recommendations could include referrals to other services, such as pediatric physical therapy, occupational therapy and more.
If you need additional support, especially after a diagnosis, Swindells Resource Center is also here to help.
