Providence Alaska Learning Institute
Providence Alaska Learning Institute
At Providence Health & Services Alaska, we recognize the importance and far-reaching impact of supporting continuous learning.
With this in mind, the goal of the Providence Alaska Learning Institute is to promote excellent healthcare, a healthy human environment and the spirit of service that reflects our core values, by providing continuous learning opportunities to employees and others on healthcare advancements in technology, leadership and development.
Providence Health & Services Alaska offers a variety of education programs that share a common goal; to provide education and resources to support healthy lifestyles and management of chronic illness. From heart disease patients learning to regain their former level of activity to lung disease patients learning that they can be active and participate in life – our education programs offer targeted learning, a helpful caring staff, and a commitment to you and your family.
Most of our programs require a physician referral in order for you to participate. We can help you by faxing a referral order directly to your health care provider’s office. This is an important step for all of us; if you are interested in entering one of our programs you are inviting us to become part of your healthcare team. Our programs are not meant to replace the care you are already receiving; instead, we want to assist your health care provider in their care of you, meanwhile providing the information you need to successfully manage your health and maintaining communication with your health care provider.
Our education programs address all of the important issues in your life; preventing disease, managing a chronic illness, and returning to health after illness. You know what is important and what is needed for you and your family to live the life you want to live. What would you like to learn? Wellness begins with education. How can we help you?
Please contact Providence Alaska Learning Institute at 907-212-3011 with any questions you may have about educational opportunities or to let us know how we're doing. We are always happy to hear from you.

Providence Alaska Heath & Social Services, Care Management maintains a deep commitment to the education of social work interns/practicum students. Our training program provides an opportunity for students to learn and grow in the field of medical social work. There are internships in a variety of settings, including the acute care hospital, children’s hospital, cancer center, specialty hospital, long-term care facilities and specialty and rural critical access hospitals.
In addition, social workers can gain competencies as outlined in the NASW Standards for Social Work Practice in Healthcare Settings. This includes work in behavioral health, care coordination, discharge planning, grief and loss, chronic illness, oncology, and assessment and screening. Care Management allows students to have a diverse and supportive learning experience. Interns work with an inter-disciplinary team of nurses, physicians, and clinical social workers daily that assist them in their career development process.
Each social work intern is assigned a field instructor who is a master’s level social worker and serves as their preceptor. After an initial orientation each person receives an hour of supervision from their field instructor weekly. The social work supervisors are a diverse group of social workers who have experience in many areas of medical social work. They are highly committed to providing quality supervision and assisting interns in developing as professionals. The supervisors meet bimonthly to enhance their supervision skills.
Care Management provides both in-person and online training to students. All students must go through an orientation with the Providence Alaska Learning Institute (PALI) and with Care Management. This internship includes the opportunity to take online class through the Academy of Certified Case Managers and training in evidence-based practices and clinical documentation.
Learn more about the PALI process.
Care Management only accepts second-year master’s in social work graduate students who attend universities that have a memorandum of understanding with Providence Alaska Health & Services.
