Small Bowel Enteroscopy
We strive to create a comfortable environment for each patient. Our doctors use small bowel enteroscopy to diagnose symptoms of digestive issues with precision and care.
A small bowel enteroscopy is used to examine gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, small bowel tumors, polyps and other small bowel diseases. This procedure may also be used to treat other conditions with the upper GI tract or help diagnose diseases of the small intestine.
Let your doctor know about all of the medications you are taking, including blood thinners. Do not eat anything after midnight on the night before your scheduled procedure. It is important to follow the instructions given to you by your physician's office.
You will be given a mild sedative intravenously to help you relax. Numbing spray may be used on the back of your throat to prevent gagging. An endoscope is inserted into your mouth and passed to your GI tract. A biopsy may be done to collect tissue samples to send to the lab for testing. You may experience a mild cramping sensation or pressure during the procedure.
The test takes about an hour. You will need to arrange for transportation home since you will not be able to drive after the procedure.
