Providence Blood Cancers and Blood Disorders Program

At Providence, you are cared for. Whether you are diagnosed with a blood disorder or blood cancer, our team of hematology specialists will guide your treatment with compassion and expertise.

Meet the Team

At Providence, you'll have access to a vast network of dedicated and compassionate providers who offer personalized care by focusing on treatment, prevention and health education.

Our team of blood disorder experts, also known as hematologists, provide care to people diagnosed with blood disorders and blood cancers. We utilize a team-based approach to cancer care, which includes fellowship-trained oncologists and hematologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, integrative medicine clinicians, dietitians, oncology nurses and social workers, and more. This provides the greatest benefit to our patients by surrounding them with different specialists and expertise.

We have many teams that support patients during their treatment at Providence. They offer emotional and practical support, so that patients can focus on their treatment. Learn more about our cancer support services.

As one of the few highly specialized blood cancer treatment centers in the region, we provide world-class care and promising new therapies. The Earle A. Chiles Research Institute is a Providence Center of Excellence for immuno-oncology and cellular therapy. We give patients the opportunity to participate in innovative clinical trials to treat leukemia, lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndromes and myeloma.

Providence Cancer Institute specialists treat adult blood cancers, including:

  • Leukemia
    • Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)
    • Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
    • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
    • Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)
    • Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL)
  • Lymphoma
    • Hodgkin Lymphoma
    • Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
  • Multiple Myeloma

Blood cancer treatment options may include:

  • Chemotherapy, can include immunotherapy, targeted therapies, or other cytotoxic chemicals to kill cancer cells.
  • Cellular therapies through both FDA-approved treatments and clinical trials. One type of adoptive T-cell therapy, called CAR T-cell therapy, can be used for treating lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma.
  • Autologous Stem Cell Transplant, as one of two accredited stem cell transplant locations in Oregon, our transplant team has extensive experience supporting patients throughout this treatment.
  • Clinical Trials are available through the Earle A. Chiles Research Center. Your care team will identify if any trials are appropriate for you.

Our hematologists provide the same excellent care for non-cancer blood conditions as the world-class cancer care that Providence Cancer Institute is known for. Our specialists bring wide knowledge, advanced diagnostic skills and excellence in teaching and educating both clinicians and patients. They coordinate closely with several specialties including OB/GYN, cardiology and surgery to tailor treatment plans and ensure comprehensive care.

We treat the following conditions:

  • Hypercoagulable states and venous thrombosis
  • Bleeding disorders, such as von Willebrand’s disease, hemophilia and platelet disorders
  • Hemoglobinopathies including thalassemias and sickle cell disease
  • Low blood cell counts (white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets)
  • Microangiopathic hemolytic anemias
  • Disorders of iron (iron deficiency, iron overload)
  • Porphyria
  • Autoimmune disorders affecting blood cells
  • Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)
